Katsu Goto Legacy Week was celebrated on the Big Island during the week of September 18-23, 2023. Many events were held on the island including a memorial service held at Hamakua Jodo Mission on the morning of September 23, 2023.
Before the gravesite service, a special introduction was held inside to recognize special guests of honor who traveled from Japan, the U.S. mainland, and the outer islands be at the service. Some of the guests included relatives of Katsu Goto,which included Toyoko Saeki, Akemi Ishizu, Dr. Katherine Wong, Bruce Wong and Margaret Kent Wong that traveled from afar. Akiko Furutani, who serves on the Board of Directors for the Goto of Hiroshima Foundation was also present.
A heartfelt performance by cast members of the musical “Peace on Your Wings,” followed before the outdoor service started, officiated by guest minister Rev. Masanari Yamagashi of the Honokaa, Kohala, Waimea and Paauilo Hongwanji Missions.
